Come see what awaits for food rides and amusements.  Be sure to check out the Iron Shark.  Its gray columns and blue track highlight the Euro-Fighter’s signature lift and a 97-degree first drop.  From there guests are sent upside down twice in matter of seconds.  An Immelman leads into a diving loop, which leaves riders wondering which way is up.  The vehicle then flies through the structure and heads through two more inversions, a top hat and vertical loop.  The last surprise is the brake run, where the cars are held over 30 feet above the pounding surf, making for a great visual.

The entire family will enjoy the thrill and excitement of right angle turns, accelerated speeds, and “The Hamilton Spin”, a maneuver that spins the boat 360° on its axis throwing a head high wall of water into the air.

Haunted Mayfield Manor is the home of Dr. Horace Mayfield, once a respected doctor, upcoming community leader, and son of a prominent physician in Galveston.

During the great Hurricane of 1900, Dr. Mayfield – who was engaged to be married prior to the storm – lost his bride, the lovely blonde Sara Stone. He also lost his parents, including his mother – the bedridden Lenora Mayfield – and his father, Dr. Horatio Mayfield. Most importantly to the young Dr. Horace Mayfield, all his research documentation was also lost in the great storm.

Many people think slavery ended on September 22, 1862 – the date Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. In reality, many slaves weren’t freed until much later when news of the proclamation reached their towns. The last of those slaves lived in the South and were freed on June 19, 1865 after the Emancipation Proclamation was read on a harbor pier in Galveston, Texas. This date eventually became known as “Juneteenth.” While celebrations were long held in Galveston and various parts of the country in earlier years, Texas lead the way in making Juneteenth an official state holiday in 1980.Today, Juneteenth is celebrated in more than 40 states throughout the country.

My name is Kelly Railean, but most people just call me “RAILEAN”. I founded Railean Distillers, LLC and constructed the first and only distillery in the Houston / Galveston vicinity with the vision of re-establishing the American rum industry in the USA. Most Americans don’t realize that rum was the “Original” American spirit with over 60 rum distilleries in operation in the 1700’s. To see this American tradition taxed and regulated out of existence was a sad day for all Americans.

Family, friends and co-workers thought I was crazy to quit the rat-race and start-up my own company; especially in a world monopolized by mass-produced spirits companies, where very few woman have ventured. However, my fascination and passion for sailing, tropical islands, pirates, parrots (and of course rum and tequila); determined my destiny. Today, my dream of owning a distillery & making Handcrafted American Rum™ has come true but it has taken over 5 years to get to this point.

Explore Pelican Island Texas

Pelican Island in Galveston, TX is its own island, distinct from Galveston—but as the island is only accessible via roadway from Galveston, and is part of Galveston City, it’s often considered to be part of Galveston Island rather than part of the mainland. Despite its relative isolation, Pelican Island offers a mix of activities, hosting campgrounds, fishing grounds, and old naval vessels at Seawolf Park.

Galveston’s Pelican Island is also home to Texas A&M University at Galveston, with much of its land being bought in 1965 and donated to the University. Despite this, most of the island is left fairly undeveloped, with only a single major road running across the island. This makes it a great place to get away from the noise and bustle of the city.

Cross the drawbridge along Pelican Island Causeway to reach the island itself, then continue down Seawolf Parkway for 10 to 15 minutes and you’ll be at Seawolf Park—the star attraction of Pelican Island. Once an immigration station site—an Ellis Island of the South, if you will—the Park now homes an unlikely combination of features: fishing grounds, picnic sites, and retired naval vessels.

Texas A&M University Galveston Campus offers educational outreach programs to people of all ages.

Sea Camp is a week-long residential adventure exploring the wonders of the marine and estuarine environments for campers ages 10-18. As a Sea Camper you will have access to research vessels, oceanographic equipment, laboratory facilities, and a professional staff enabling you to learn about the ocean through hands-on experiences.

Sea Campus Kids is a marine oriented day program for campers ages 6-11.  Campers will have their hands-on and feet-in as they participate in activities such as wading through a salt marsh, dissecting a fish or seining in the surf.

Talented & Gifted (TAG) Career-oriented Sea Camp programs for high ability students ages 14-18.

Internships for Educators Texas A&M University Galveston Campus sponsors free summer internships for school teachers, counselors, administrators, and other individuals involved in education. Internships are operated in conjunction with Sea Camp and Talented & Gifted (TAG).

Hosting the USS Cavalla and the USS Stewart, the American Undersea Warfare Center is another major attraction of the park. Google reviews adore the experience of entering the old World War II submarine, the Cavalla—a relic of one of the most devastating and far-reaching conflicts of human history, the Cavalla shows off first-hand the ground-breaking technology that now comes standard in naval vessels. The USS Stewart is also on display—it’s a fascinating ship because it is one of only three US destroyer escorts in the world. This unique designation gives it its own special features and considerations. While not part of the exhibits, people visiting the AUWC can also view the remains of the S.S. Selma, a tanker that is the largest concrete ship ever constructed.

Designed by Houston-based architect Joe Finger, the 200-acre site on the bank of Moses Bayou boasts a championship layout with elevated greens and tee boxes.  Amid the blue sky and palm trees, golfers enjoy the tropical climate for year-round play.  Winds from Galveston Bay, water on 12 holes and  sand traps present a challenging course. Beginning April 28th, 2014, the Bayou Golf Course began an 18 hole green’s renovation which includes the putting green using Mini-Verde Ultra Dwarf. The golf course redesign Architect, Mike Nuzzo, has increased the average size per green to 5,000 sq.ft.. In addition, we have rebuilt all sand traps and added new tee complexes on holes #5,7,10,13,16 &17. We have also added a new, one of a kind, 5 1/2 acre Family Pitch & Putt golf course for walkers, local High School Golf Team’s and anyone wanting to spend quality time with friends and family.

For tee times, call 409-739-9622.

The Texas City Dike juts out into Galveston Bay on the easternmost end of Texas City. The dike is parallel to and north of the 50-foot deep, 600-foot wide Texas City Channel, which allows shipping traffic to access the Port of Texas City. The dike’s structure consists of a 28,200-foot-long (approximately 5.34 miles) pile dike paired with a rubble-mound dike that runs along the south edge of the pile dike (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 2007). The Texas City Dike was built to protect the Texas City Channel from cross currents and excessive silting, although the channel must still be dredged frequently to prevent shoaling in the waterway.

The Texas City Museum is supported by the City of Texas City. Located at 409 6th Street North in Texas City, the Museum acquired its current building in March 1992. The 30,000-square-foot building, previously known as the old J.C. Penney building, was donated by the McDaniel family of La Marque. Since its opening in March 1994, visitors from around the United States and abroad have toured the Museum.
