In 2008, Hurricane Ike flooded the museum and destroyed most of its collection. After years of cleanup and reconstruction, the Railroad Museum reopened with a pristine collection and even more train history to share. After journeying through the railroad museum embark on Galveston Historic Tour, for a blast from the past as you learn more about Galveston’s history. You’ll also get a chance to see the Broadway Mansions, the Harbor, Historic Downtown, and Victorian Homes.
The Port of Galveston
The Port of Galveston is the oldest port in the Gulf of Mexico. It was recognized in 1825, by a declaration from the Congress of Mexico, before Texas became part of the United States. The port began as a trading post and has grown to over 850 acres of port facilities now. The prime natural location of Galveston’s port was named the best natural harbor in Texas. The seaport survived many hurricanes surprisingly unharmed, while the rest of Galveston suffered extensive damage. Galveston is in the top five most active cruise ship homeport in North America. It’s also one of the top ten homeports in the world. Most of the port’s revenue comes from parking fees, as most of the cruise passengers drive to the port and leave their cars while they cruise the Gulf of Mexico.
